I don't suppose it matters if the engine is just stopped or idling, but checking from cold, as it were, will give a false reading. If it is like our old Powertrain, then there should be a filter. Take that off and have a look at the oil.
I assume the dump valve is returning?

Re: 3CX black cab: no drive
The filter is very clean as is the trans sump. A little debris but considering how neglected this machine has been, I'm not surprised. I guess the next step is to extract the dump valve to see if it is possibly blocked. I'm beginning to think the forward clutch is burnt out but it seems logical to check the dump valve first -here's hoping the problem is that simple...

Re: 3CX black cab: no drive
Me again. Does anyone know how much tranny oil to expect to drain out? -The book says it takes 11 litres dry and I appreciate some will be left in the torque converter and pump but I only got 5-6 litres out. That seems like an awful lot of mucky oil still inside. Unless my oil level was far too low in the 1st place?

Daft question but has it leaked any because oil levels can drop quite quickly with leaks if they are not regularly checked?

Not daft and it might have. I struggle to read the dipstick, not an eyesight thing but not sure I'm reading it right. It looks a little wet but barely visible compared to when it's cold. Not sure if that is sort of splashback or a genuine reading. Think I'll keep topping it up and see what happens...

Thanks essexpete, that was the way. It took 3 litres to fill properly but sadly still no forward drive☹️
