Hi all
I have recently been working on a 1946 series 1 Field Marshall.
I had it running when I bought it and noticed she was a little smokey. So I decided to fit some new piston rings.
while the head was off I pulled the piston out and checked the crank. There is a .004" tolerance for ovality on the crank pin. She is measuring in at .0025" so that is good no need to remove the crank. The big eng looked suspicious like it had previous ....
The front shell didn't seem to match the bronze end cap ?? and the oil tolerance according to Crawford's is .008" to .010" which seems excessive. I found an old "Farm Mechanisation" hand book and that stated minimum .006" oil tolerance.
So me and a retired engineering friend, set about milling the end cap shrinking the end cap to take up the slack. We then proceeded to rebore the big end back to spec. we decided to aim for the middle and go for a .007" clearance inbetween the two sets of specifications. It's only going to wear bigger, never smaller.
I am pretty well tooled up, at our farm. when I got into the vintage machinery scene years ago No one told me I'd need a fortune in tools to mend and repair them.
Thanks
Carl Hargreaves
Here is a quick video of her along with my 1948 VF crawler

Here are some pics on the milling machine ...
Note the piston ring gaps, My piston rings had a 3/16" gap !!!

Re: Field Marshall Series 1
here is the finish we achieved, which I was quite pleased with. I will post more pictures as I put it all back together. I got all the bits and pieces needed, last bank holiday from Robert Crawford's stall at the Carrington Rally in Lincolnshire.
We have had bad weather, the tractor is sheeted up outside at the moment. And our Ride on lawn mower decided to start banging it brains out so I've had to fix that to.
Thanks

Re: Field Marshall Series 1
Hi all,
This evening I fitted the new needle rollers to the little end, I stuck them in with grease, What a tedious job!!
The weight of iron flying around inside a field Marshall tractor is unreal.
Apparently after talking to Don the parts guy at Crawfords, This tractor has been rebored by .040" and fitted with a series 3A piston, which was a common thing back in the day. By the time this was done the tractor probably would of been around 8-10 yrs old and it got fitted with the latest parts. In this case a 3A piston, which has the fancy top piston ring (Firing ring)
Thanks

Nice one Carl; yes it is a tedious job sticking needle rollers in with grease but that is the best way to do it, very handy for you having a milling machine and a press, great for this type of hobby. I take it that is you in the last photo?

Hi Jeremy,
Yes that's me in the last picture. I enjoy putting the newness back into something, I've got lots more tractors and crawlers to work on as and when I get chance to go through them. This is only a hobby btw. We are tidying up around our farm for our open evening, along side the pre-war car clubs visit.
Thanks

Re: Field Marshall Series 1
Hi All,
This evening I've been working on the cylinder head for the series 1 Marshall, the decompressor valve has seen better days and was beyond a re-face, so after another call to Crawford's and I'm £65 poorer. I now have a nice new one.
Anyway the valve seat in the head will need to be re-cut, Luckily I've got all the gear to hand and I'm able to do most things myself. As soon as I find the pilot to go up the valve guide to centre the cutter !?!
Thanks
Carl Hargreaves
