I got the opportunity to participate in bringing an old Smith 21 shovel back to life.
As far as we know it has been sitting idle for about 40 years with the master clutch stuck.
The first goal is to get the old Gardner diesel running againg. Apparently the fuel injection pump was jammed solid but I had that taken apart and cleaned, so now the plungers move freely.
Looks a bit like a diamond in the rough

Re: Smith Rodley 21 the resurrection.
Great project Anders the engine is a Gardner 6LW and now you have had the pump freed off it should start fairly easily so long as no damp has got into the cylinders, I trust you will turn the engine over by hand to check it has not had a standing seizure first?
These engines are fitted with de-compressor levers to aid starting by hand; good luck with it please let us know how you get on with it.

Re: Smith Rodley 21 the resurrection.
The engine moves very smoothly actually, so it shouldn´t be any more trouble
According to the former owners wife, it has a beautiful sound, and she told me last time I was there to work with the injection pump that she is really looking forward to hear it again
Our goal is to have it moved home before winter really arrives, which is actually a very tight schedule. But hey, everything is possible!
There will be more photos and films of it to show the progress
With best regards

Re: Smith Rodley 21 the resurrection.
Finally got the old Gardner running the other day!
Next task is to get the digging lock working. And after that, who knows? Hopefully everything else will work just fine!
