Demag B504 face shovel working for Penfolds of Barnham in a pit in Sussex-late 50's/60's.Apparently there were two in the fleet at the time according to a chap whose father operated one of them.Penfolds had several pits in the Chichester area-readymix concrete plants- and wharves at Littlehampton and Shoreham to accomodate the four dredgers they operated. The company was sold to Amey's around 1967 I believe.

They were widely used by the RAF in WWII, so the one photographed may well be Ex-WD converted to tipper for its days in civvy street.
The third axle was a Primrose conversion IIRC.

The Austin K6 6 wheelers were only built for the military. Pre war the army had 3 ton 6 x4 's as their standard truck, they had a WD design rear bogie and were quite good off road. Early in the war they switched to 4 x 4 's like Bedford QL's, one of the reasons being they used less materials.
However they continued to order Austin 6 x 4 's as some long bodies like workshops didn't fit on the 4 x 4's. They were quite popular and some of the recovery gantry vehicles served with the army well into the 1960's
They were helped in the pace of change by leaving 60,000 trucks behind at Dunkirk !!
