Greg, sounds like somebody has gone to an awful lot of trouble to make sure that you cannot repair these engines, well not very easily anyway.

Fordson Major's are the same, do you have a cover just above the tappets? If so you can get some clips or pegs to hold the tappets fully up and get the camshaft out easily. On a Major you can do that, the wider foot provides better wear characteristics and enables more appropriate contact with the camshaft.

I wonder if a set of magnets, one for each tappet, suspended on a wire or threaded rod down the pushrod channels, could hold up the tappets?

Hi Kari, actually I was thinking along the same lines, I think glue the string/cord to the button magnet (I have plenty of them around) and tie them off on the rocker gear and that should hold them up as far as they can go and hopefully the bearing journals are small enough to pass under the cam follower flange. You may be onto something there. It will probably be best part of a week before I get back to the fork but I will let you know how it goes and a few pics as well...........Cheers, greg.

NEW INFORMATION !!! Ok, I got to speak with a retired engine reconditioner that remembers these D11 engines, and yep they all eventually did the same thing, but there is more than one problem that brings about the demise of the cam timing gear. One problem is that the oil relief valve in the oil pump gets stuck shut and that causes load on the cam and shears the teeth off. Another problem he found was the bearings in the block would turn and cause lack of oil supply tighten the cam up when it was hot but would relax and cam would be easy to turn when it was cold, same result, stripped teeth and or stripped drive between the drive collar and the gear. The fibre gear itself is up to the task but is a problem once those other problems arise...........so all in all I see that as a happy ending, I know the problems, solutions are easy.

Bahahahahaha, silly me thinking it was going to be simple................now I find the replacement gears are no longer available, supplier in aus says no longer available and all the ones I have tried in the U.S say the same thing P.No 13024 11200...............oh man..............BTTDB............

You are getting closer to haveing a blank machined to suit, but one last suggestion would be to contact a Nissan car club and see if there were any parts compatiblity between the engines of the time. Unfortunatly, most seem to be chain drive.

Hi Ian, yeah I did a lot of messaging and ringing around yesterday and today, and all the checking in the world suggests it is almost the only gear driven one in the datsun garage..........the biggest education I got from it was the price that any of the older datsun engines and cars are now going for...........
