Just bought a jcb with fordson super major skid unit.Just en-quiring age of the beast and whether its a JCB 2or 3. Backhoe has JCB2 stamped on it.Usual rusty cab but still digs well.

I make it between February 1964 - July 1964. The serial number should confirm the exact month.

The serial number on the JCB 2 was on top of the outer right hand side mudguard. Yours is definately a 2. Narrow cab as opposed to the wider cab of the JCB 3.

Update on my recent purchase.
Still very confused at correct age and whether it is a Super major or standard major engine.as serial no has been eaten by tin worm.Is there any easy way of identifying which engine it could be? Looked at a historical blog on this site which said jcb2 had a 3 cylinder engine and was manufactured between 1964-67.This is definitely 4 cylinders and Fordson.Just fitted new starter solenoid to avoid being squashed if left in gear whilst shorting out solenoid and depressing starter lever .at the same time! Shame all existing wiring has been disconnected and fuseboxes +key switch have been broken although voltage regulator has been re-wired albeit with conduit cable.Topped up hydraulic oil with 20 litres?,all rams closed.Fitted new rocker cover gasket and adjusted valve clearances.Found reason duty meter not working.inner cable removed so have installed complete new cable care of S.F.T (anti clockwise duty meter).Next job to clean all oil off radiator fins and flush radiator as water looks very brown.Loads of play in front left wheel bearing so steering very heavy and unresponsive one way. Once mechanicals are up to scratch i will attempt to tackle the tin worm

The engine number should be stamped on the block somewhere, perhaps that may give you the lead that you are looking for? Just an idea?
