Screeching noise

Post #1 by grant » Thu Aug 09, 2012 5:53 pm

Hi I've had this problem for quite a while now on my 54 3cx when you rev the engine it makes a loud screeching noise it's been reported to our workshop and they thought it was the alternator after they eventually got the right alternator and fitted it along with new fan belts it's still doing it it seems worse when it's first started i'am wondering if it's maybe the turbo any ideas guys?

Does the noise get worse when the alternator is under load, lights on ? belt tension ? remove belt off pulley and see if you stil got a noise. That would rule out that problem. Power steering perhaps ? Some new items can be faulty.

Sometimes it can also be the water pump on it's way out that makes a screeching noise. This especially can happen when you put a new tight belt on.

Don't forget to check the condition of the pulleys themselves if they are worn out then a new drive belt won't make much difference; as said above also check out the water pump.

It does seem worse when it's in gear when it's in neutral it screeches but only for a few seconds I will check out the pulleys and water pump tomorrow its really beginning to annoy me I have reported it to our workshop several times along with a leaking front hub and hydroclamps that keep releasing but they don't bother doing anything about it
