3D II tacho

Post #1 by mambo » Sun Apr 29, 2012 4:07 pm

Hi all

The tacho has never worked on my 3DII, and i was planning on taking a look at it.
what would be the best plan of attack for troubleshooting this?
I asume its just a cable from the back of the dash to a sender on the side of the engine block (above the rear nearside enginemount)
The manual doesnt really cover the tacho

Any ideas anyone? :?:

Tacho drive is normally on the front of the 4/98 engine.RHS on the timing cover. If the cable is still attached, take it off the driven end and try flicking between fingers.Need someone to look at clock in cab.If the needle is moving, chances are the drive unit is at fault. If no movement, take the other end off the clock and you will likely find the cable is broken or damaged.Would guess the cable is the most likely suspect although check both ends are actually connected first!

Update:

It turns out the cable was round on the dash end
I've pulled the cable out of its outer and tried the good end into the dial and it flicks as i twist the other end
So should just be a matter of popping another cable on  I hope :D

I replaced mine at the weekend, complete misery.
The stump in the back of the clock pulled the puddings out of the back of the clock when I went to remove it.
Then when I tried to reassemble it, the little drive shaft pushed forward and compresed the little hairspring used for returning the needle to rest when the engine is shut off.
I got it all sorted in the end, but it was very tedious reasembling that clock and it's innards.... be careful you don't push your new cable too far past what feels right, or the same will happen you! took most of Saturday to get that done!!

Update:

After several phone calls it seams getting another cable is going to be allot harder than i would have hoped.
So i thought i would try my own fix. As it was just the end 5-6mm of the cable that was rounded, i moved the plastic stop down the cable that amount and cut same off cable end. After oiling the cable and refitting i found it had worked a treat.
So now i have a full compliment of working dials :D

Nomally just smack it between two hammers to put a flat on the cable inner!

Julian.
