Inchgreen Backhoe Loader

Post #1 by Steelfab » Fri Oct 02, 2009 1:48 am

Hi anyone remember the Inchgreen Backhoe Loader which was built in Scotland in the early 1960's?

I have searched the internet but to no prevail and have only found one image in the JCB archives of the Beaver model which I have attached for information.

Be interested to know what the history of the company was and if anyone has a spec sheet, pictures or know the whereabouts of a machine?

Hi Julian
Not 'seen' you for a bit online.

Inchgreen
A very breif history appeared in Classic plant and machinery in response to a reader letter and there was a photo IIRC. bit late to search for article.

Heres what i remember;
They are one of the (many) missing firms to add to my list of articles to write for the wiki. That machine looks quite modern, I thought they did not last long (as an excavator builder). Believe they were a glasgow engineering firm looking to diversify and as they were fabricators thought they could build diggers, but had issues with weld fatigue. :!: and rather alot of compertion in the market at that time.

Looks like the "Beaver" had a few ideas from others! The backhoe looks a bit MF.
The front arms look a little light.

Hi Julian,

I cannot add anything to the details about the digger, but Inchgreen, the place, is in Greenock, and there was an engineering company of that name there certainly in the '60s.

The Inchgreen drydock still exists and was used this year to build the giant floating dock gates for the new Clyde submarine base.

Interesting to note that to the left of the machine in your picture there is a Massey loader based on a '65' without the more usual industrial cast hard nose, and what looks like a dump trailer with a goose-neck weight transfer hitch - wonder if it was a version of Massey's own 'Rear Dump Hauler' marketed with the industrial tractors, but it looks a bit too 'boxy' for the design I have seen?

It's always amazing what is in the background of these old pictures, thanks for posting!

Some of you have hawk eyes :) I had not even noticed the MF badge. That makes the picture pre 1965 (am I right) so the Beaver looks very modern in that era.

A quick search for henham-stearm-rally :D comes up with:

Henham stearm rally

Hope that helps, as it took a couple of tries before I realised it was the spelling that was causing the search to fail!
