Well,
When you walk past something every day you tend to take things for granted, so thought I'd share some pics of the various cranes we have at work.
Fist up is a NCK, rated at 50 tons.
We have a smaller Coles, rated at 18 ton with legs down or 8 ton on its wheels:
Then we have 2 Iron Fairy's, rated at 6 ton:

I can see the need for the 50 tonne NCK, wondering why you don't use an excavator with hook attached to the boom for the lighter stuff.....presumably a dedicated crane is safer, in that it's accurately rated on what it can lift ?
Pictures great !

When I worked on the plant in Exeter we had a Morris diesel electric crane as a yard crane powered by a Ford 4D diesel engine.

Hello John,
Practicality really mate, teh iron fairys are used in that many differernt jobs, can pick something up in the workshop, carry it to the wash then off to the welders for example, trying to tramp everywhere with an excavator wouldn't do the yard much good and there also slower. Health and saftey comes into it as well, you don't know if the machine may have a drift problem etc.
I still use an excavator for jobs on the yard, stacking tyres, moving various bits as they tend to be a bit quicker than a crane (plus its easier to get in and out for slinging!)

Hello Jack,
No extensions for the NCK I'm afraid. We don't have any need for height on the yard, more about sheer weight we can lift.
Couple of pics of a Volvo 140 ( i know, i know, fancy using a ovlov in a yard full of Cat, but it was the nearest one to hand!) I was using to sort out tyres the other day, these are 27.00 R49 tyres for a 777 and weigh about a ton and a quarter each.

Thanks, Stuart, must be quite a task fitting those tyres, guess there's a technique to it.
