Re: Lucky
I hate to see a collection like that being broken up but at least they are gone to collectors and good homes,Peter Fordham was a smashing bloke. Also a good friend of his,Dai Morgan died the end of last year.I had put Dai back in contact with Peter a few years ago as they worked together on muckshifting jobs.
The end of this sale could have ended up in tragedy if that D8 had slid off. You have got to be very carefull with tracklayers as they can easily loose their footing whilst being loaded. The D8 was pulling that dead roller as well so even more of a chance to slip. Trying to use a telehandler to shove it on was a bit optimistic, and using the forks to push it When I was on the plant ,we did not have ramps, just railway sleepers that weighed a lot, when wet they were even harder to handle. We used to load some machines over the side, dozers Drotts and Hymacs.

Hi Graham and Martyn,
WHAT LUCK
I was at the sale that day and it was truly a sad time.
Sad to see Peter Fordhams collection, (a lifes work), split up.
Sad to learn that the buyer who had paid £28,000 for the D8R never lived to enjoy his purchase.
He too died shortly after the sale day.
I would say that luck played no part that weekend at all.
Perhaps it was just the experience of the people present thet saved the loading of the 8R and roller from becoming a complete disaster.
(Couple of old tyres under the tracks may have helped)
Fred

Re: Lucky
The ONLY lucky bit is that the machine did not fall off the bed whilst being loaded. It was very sad to hear the the buyer of the D8 died shortly after and never enjoyed driving his D8. Thats life , very sad outcome I have lost 6 ex workmates to illness in 2012, 5 to cancer.Life goes on,but we all have good memories of friends and loved ones that have past.
On loading I use conveyer belting, tyres and track mats.

Re: Lucky
I could not face it to go to this sale as I know how much effort goes into restoring and building up a collection like Peter had built up over many years. It must have been very hard for his family , and a very difficult day for people close to him.He served the Caterpillar club well over the years.Photo shows Peter doing a bit of muckshifting.
