Drag Line.

Post #1 by mechman » Wed Sep 16, 2026 11:52 am

Hi all.
Knocked this model up, don't know if scale is near. It has 5 drive motors ( one for each function). I'm still struggling with the bucket geometry.

Bloody 'eck Norm, that looks complicated!
Motors for slew, drag, hoist, and 2 tracks?
Is it the geometry around the drag chains and hoist?

Hj Pete.
Yes, the drag and dump.
the Motors are for slew, drag, hoist. Jib (boom), and 1 for tracks, to complicated to have a motor for each track and control them.

Norm I know south of FA with Draglines but always have a fascination, probably because my father used them, sadly mostly before my memory. I was lucky to have a little play with the Cub at Andrew Beaulah's .
I have watched a lot of clips, sad anorak that I am. There are often comments about the drag setup, so I assume it is critical. Have a look at the following working: https://youtu.be/nwIFmd0HrIg?is=x7NTlKkJn1qS9GWk
There are sites that go into the dynamics as well but too complicated for my brain!
It seems to me that the bucket needs to be able to be swinging free on full tip as the bucket is directly below the jib end. When in the carry/swing position the toe of the bucket needs to be high enough to stop spilling. What I am trying to say is the length of the dump line in relation to the drag chains needs to be played with.

Hi Pete.
It took a good while (Days) to get that bucket dumping. A lot of trial and error. It has to dump when the drag line is released.
