Barford 100 Dumper

Post #1 by Greengiant » Mon Mar 07, 2011 9:52 pm

Hi, new member here. Have just aquired a 1966 Barford 100 dumper that i intend to restore back to its former glory.

It is currently orange with black wheels - does anyone know whether these are the original colours or if not the RAL numbers of original paint.

Also can anyone recomend any sites for sourcing spares - at the moment i need a seat and a steering wheel. I an also trying to find a picture of one similar if anyone can help it will be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Simon

From google images a Cheffins auction item . Looks like the orange paint showing through. If this is the one with curved rear toolbox its the main vehicle in the film 'A Home of Your Own ' (see Amazon) a funny silent film with lots of old British actors and old British plant :D sadly black and white.

Thanks for that, most helpful and interesting - mine has got the sloping tool box on the back and looks a similar orange.

Trying to attach a picture of mine - but its 1-0 to technology at the moment.

If you notice the Ronnie Barker one pictured above also belongs to ' A+B Hire Ltd' see side of skip , which was a divison of Aveling Barford. :ugeek:
There was a restored one featured in Classic Plant and Machinery recently and they identified it as a Thwaites ho ho :D

New poster here, and I have also (I think) joined the Barford club. It was advertised as a Benford, but I think it is a Barford after looking at some rather indistinct photos on the web. It has a Petter AVA1 that starts perfectly and goes well. The chassis is solid, and David Cornwallis has the parts for the steering box, which is fortunate as "boat like" doesn't begin to describe the steering.

I have a couple of questions:

- Does anyone know where the serial number would be? I want to get this back on the road (because it will be a laugh), so knowing the serial number would be good.

- Does anyone have any pictures clearly showing the toobox at the back? I can see the remains of it, but I can't really work out what it looked like. If it is simple curves, then I will make a new one when I remake the tin work.

- Does anyone know what sort of orange they should be painted? I could take a part to the paint shop, but if someone knows the right answer that would be great.

Thanks!

The serial number on mine is located on the front of the seat support (see photo). The tool box is the same profile as the mudguards. I need to get some new ones made.

Regarding the colour - tried several shades of orange - and the nearest match I have found was Howard Rotovator Orange.

If you need any pictures of the tool box let me know.

Ooooh, another one! Just dropped by the forum and I saw your post!

Amazingly, I found the serial number plate on the bottom of the trailer that I brought it home on. I will look at the seat support to see if the mounting holes are there. Mine is a simple metal tag - yours is significantly fancier.

In the end, I chose Field Marshall orange for the paint - mainly because I was ordering parts for the Field Marshall and they had some orange. I've cleaned up the wheels and fitted new tyres - a machine that goes flat every week is worse than useless, and ends up being unused. Here she is a few months ago:

In the last few weeks the outside of the bucket has been cleaned up and primed, but she has had to be pressed into service moving about 20 tonnes of soil, so is working hard.

A few pics of the tool box would be very handy, and those "foot rest" things in front of the pedals - mine have both "gone". Thanks!
