Jeremy what a great thread this is. :thumbup:

The methodical and skilfull way you are doing this is an inspiration.
Most people would not have countenanced rebuilding this old lump for one second.

Fascinating to me who struggles with an oil change on a motorbike :D

Thanks Craig :thumbup: must say I don't think many people would have bothered trying to save the 'old gal' full stop; the rebuild of the lump appeared to be the lesser of the evils so as to speak and as expected turned into many additional jobs along the way, next job will be to fit a new seal kit to the DPA fuel pump as it was leaking, that will prove a challenge as I've never done one before, then the radiator looks gummed up with crap so that will have to come out and be flushed and so it goes on. Keeps me busy though. :thumbup:

He has had his knee operation successfully done so one can hope but I don't usually get to know very quickly, but if I do hear of a gathering then I will post it on here unless Neil beats me to it. :thumbup:

:lol: Ahh yes, years ago we always referred to an engine as a lump :lol: This machine is a real challenge; nonetheless I'm happy to give it my best shot, there is a rebuild plan in the back of my mind. :think:

First trip up there this year to try and get started again; it's always hard to get back into the swing of things, first job on the agenda was to get the valve clearances set, job done, but came across an issue which was that one of the push rods had not seated correctly in the tappet :o
Next job; although I had painted the rocker cover in grey primer it needed a quick top coat, nothing too special just a rust preventive measure, got that done, next job (no photos) a small cover which fits on the back of the bell housing, that turned the air blue :oops:
Finally got the two fuel filters fitted back into position, so not a bad days work. :thumbup:

Yesterday was a scorching hot day, perhaps not the best for working in, but alas I cannot book the weather! One job I wanted to get complete was the fitting of the oil filter housing which is bolted to the manifold side of the engine, it has the canister type oil filter which screws on upside down (there are some crack pot ideas and for me upside down filters is one) :doh:
The next :doh: is the fact that you cannot remove the oil filter without either taking off the inlet and exhaust manifolds, or taking the two housing bolts which hold the oil filter assembly off the engine block.

Looking at the state the housing was in I opted to disconnect the two steel pipes which are mounted on the bottom of the housing (they run to the oil cooler) then clean off the housing while off the engine, job done with a new gasket made I fitted this back onto the engine block and loosely screwed on the oil filter (just to stop muck getting in until I'm nearer the time for run up).

Next job was the starter motor which was refitted, I want to get the hydraulic hoses fitted next, the first issue was one of two pick up pipes both of which are shot, one with a hole covered by packing tape :roll:

The last job done was fitting the leak off back onto the tops of the fuel injectors, still a long way to go but slowly progressing.

Yesterday I went up to the 690 with a simple plan in mind, fit the exhaust and inlet manifolds and the two high pressure hydraulic pump outlet hoses, on the face of it a simple task. Before I even uncovered the machine I got the intake manifold out and started the cleaning down process, now there was a piece of plate/metal held onto the manifold by a pair of jubilee clips, to be fair I had guessed at what was probably going to be revealed. You guessed it another problem, I couldn't even venture to guess how the hole had got there but it will need a proper repair. :shock:

I got the two high pressure hydraulic hoses fitted back on and finally the exhaust manifold and turbo, so there was some progress albeit not as much as I had hoped for.
