Re: Looking for information on hire rates of plant in the 1960's
Hi Martyn,
Thats before Monopoly Money, (decimalisation), when money was real.
We used to get between £1 and £1/5 shillings per hour for a front end loader, A JCB / Whitlock digger £2- to £2/10 shillings and £2/10 shillings to £2/15 shillings for a Drott or small blade, (TD6 / D4). You could get a 19RB for £3.
To put this in perspective an opperator would be paid £14 to £15 pounds per week, (including 10 hrs. greasing time), before stoppages. Traveling time was also paid at about 6 old pence per mile.
I could go to our local oil supplier in the early 60s for a 45 gal. barrel, (206 litres), of gas oil and have change from a £5- note. There was £2/10 shillings deposit for the barrel and the fuel was between 11 old pence and 1/- shilling, (5p), a gallon.
JCBs and Drotts could be bought new for little more than £2,000 / £2,500.
My tradesmans rate (1963) as a plant fitter/welder, (coded), was 6/3 then 6/6 per hour.
In 1964 on a foreman fitters rate working 14 hour shifts, booking over 90 hours a week, and traveling expences I was taking home between £40 and£50.
