Hello again
A bit more progress today. Took the heads off .
The engine over heated and she has sounded a bit ragged and smoked a bit since. I half expected to find broken top piston rings on top of one of the pistons. They had a habit of making a groove up the side of the piston, working their way onto the top if they overheated and broke up. Luckily the piston crowns and the bores look fine. Hopefully a good hone and a set of rings will sort it. I'll keep my fingers crossed till I draw out the pistons tomorrow. Oil pressure was good so I dont expect any problems there.
The Fowler 33s were orange for the first few years of production and a fair bit of the original colour is showing through. As I'm restoring as original, does anyone know the paint colour code?
Heres a photo. from today, and in case anyone thinks this tractor is old, look at this plate on my lathe.

Thanks Martyn,
Removed the pistons yesterday. Partial seizure on No.4. The piston is U.S. but the bore is reclaimable. The rest is fine, the bores are just well glazed.
I've got all the gaskets, so just a piston and a set of rings to find. I'll find out whats available tomorrow.

Re: Challenger project
Hi
Picked up piston and rings today, made my wallet a deal lighter. If head office finds out she'll kill me.
If she (head office that is) hasn't got too many plans for the week-end I could have her (the Fowler that is) running by Monday.

Re: Challenger project
Hello Martyn,
Pop up any time, ring first to be sure im there.
Couldn't spend time on the tractor on the week-end after all.
Another set back this week, I had to take the heads to have new guides, seats cut and valves re-faced. The seats were pitted, not good enough to grind in.
Pistons re-ringed and back in now, hope to put the sump back up tomorow.

Re: Challenger project
Hello
Got my valve guides at last but no luck on the exhaust manifold, I had to weld the old one, it seems OK.
Fired her up briefly tonight. Lots of noise and a workshop full of smoke, (see photo), "thats progress"!!!
