There's some fascinating info on this web-site about the history of the motorways in Britain.

Hi Nick,I actually first operated a 580 Hymac with the track controles on each side of the seat!I then progressed to Fiat S90 and S105 machines.A good stint on a Cat duck(not final roadwork trim!) and during the winter if I had no work for the D8's I would work for many local contractors on Cat 215D upto 235C size.I also put alot of time in on Komatsu PC 120 upto PC 400 size.A breif time on a Cat 245B in a borrow pit was about the biggest I got to.
I also got to have a 'quick go' on a Demag 185 of Mowlem Minings loading a couple of Cat 785's.I had to 'borrow' Leihberr 972 to drop a torque convertor into a D9G fairley reacently.I also hired in a new Volvo EC210? to install a D8 engine.I was very impressed with this machine and used it to dig a pond out too.

Mmmm...I've just looked at what I've wrote about me driving excavators.I must point out that I am not that hot on them really.I'm ok for loading dumptrucks, crushers, lorries and roughly pulling batters but thats it.In fact I once turned a mini digger upsidedown, fairly rattled a few 8 wheeler bodies, and would have had a longer go of the Demag if I hadn't dropped 10 ton of rock into the 785 and getting roasted from the driver!.I've also done loading shovel work for D.Wardle Plant and D Morgan Plant but those things just don't float my boat.
I do regret not getting to grips with just two items of plant during my time and that is a grader and the mighty 657 scraper.Pushing them is closest I ever got.

Hi Volvo, some of the Leibherr's in this thread are McKays,he had some newish 934's?? and an older 952 on this job.He also had a couple of old Moxey's here.Morrisons had only two machines on this job.One was a Komatsu D65P lgp driven by a chap called Willie or Gordon???and the other was a D65E which was driven by a chap called Dougie. Both men were good operators. No pics, sorry.
