JCB Steering wheel

Post #1 by Robin Bristol » Thu Feb 26, 2015 12:42 pm

New to the forum and this is my first posting! Has anyone tried updating a JCB 3C steering wheel? I what to turn my classic digger into a comfortable & usable machine. I would like one of the modern thicker padded steering wheels with a ball attachment. Does anyone know of a common one that would fit. I am doing everything on a shoestring and looking for bargains wherever I can... so it will be e-bay searches for second-hand parts and then cheap deals on couriers for me. Next on the list will be a new seat!

Hello and welcome to the forum

I would think it depends on what part of the world you're in ... but Bristol might be it :-)

Knowing there are 6 places called Bristol in the US I suppose I ought to have said Bristol UK... about 120 miles south of where the JCB was made.

Do all JCB machines share a common steering wheel 'thread' mounting? At least I could make a start with those... Mine is a 1964 3C and the original wheel is very thin and worn.

On the old 1950's and 1960's machines which had power assisted steering with the Hydrosteer ram operated using the tractor link arm the steering wheel shaft was different as it depended on the base tractor steering box I.e fordson, Nuffield etc. They then changed to full power steering which uses an orbital steering valve and the ones used on the 3Cmkiii are the same Danfoss unit used today on a new 3CX. I know this because I changed it.

That's really helpful.. I guess my 64 3C is a Fordson base model... I can see the modern style steering wheels (any fitting) are not often seen for sale at bargain prices... I may have to get creative.

Are the 3cx steering wheels inter-changable with the 3C Mk3's then Julian ?
