New opencast site propposed..next door to St James Park Newcastle city centre ?!
Well I suppose the title says it all, Theres a writeup online at the chronicle newspaper that states an opencast mine site has been proposed in the middle of Newcastle city centre, ....what more can I say ?

interesting! although not as bad as would first appear, shallow depth and small amount of coal, 60k tonnes means this would be nothing more than an average ground clearance, i wouldnt expect to see any 120's and 777's thats for sure! be 40 ton bendies at most! funny how you mention "opencast" and the Greenies cack themselves and throw there hands up in the air screaming rape and pillage of mother nature! if you called Urban redevelopment of brownfield site wouldnt raise an eyebrow!

It was a similar situation our way about 20 years ago. When Ripley Town Hall was being extended to form a new Council Headquarters coal was struck during foundation work and hence was removed before any further work took place.
