Re: Classic pictures Updated 31/01/2021
I think it was an option on basic models (standard on the Station Wagons) and called Deluxe Bonnet !

Re: Classic pictures Updated 31/01/2021
One of my 109's has a 2 1/4 diesel, when I insured it I was asked what power and I replied 'It started out with some, but the majority have now escaped...'
Driving it home after I bought it you could feel valve float at about its v-max of 45mph...
The mate who is responsible for the 3 'projects' coming my way has a 109, Bill, that he bought from one of his best friends, said friend had Bill while they were both at University together and when he left he went to work for Land Rover; his first job was to look at ways to improve the 2.5 N/A diesel, so used that as an excuse to rebuild Bill onto a galavanised chassis with parabolics and Stage 1 axles, he then installed the experimental 2.5 engine he was working on, it was blue-printed and running some custom Hepolite pistons, along with an LT77 gearbox. Having driven Bill in that configuration he was a revelation compared to the 'normal' 2.5 N/A, probably running around 80 hp. He then went on to improve the 200Tdi turning it into the far cheaper to produce, lighter weight and smoother running 300Tdi. Bill now has a 200Tdi installed and every winter makes the trip from Tadley to Skye, usually with a Rapier trailer full of stuff, going to visit his creator. Meanwhile, I have a 300Tdi and LT77 lined up to go into the 2 1/4 109 which is also now running parabolics and stage 1 axles...

Yup, as Craig says the rolled edge bonnet is a 'Delux' optional or standard on Station Wagons and Safari roofed variants of the Series IIA, I think it became the only bonnet on the Series III's though for pedestrian safety(!)
Avoid 88's with Safari Roof's btw, dear god do they make them top-heavy and sketchy in the corners!

I am afraid I will be avoiding Landrover products altogether. Either old and crap to drive or modern and apparently superb to drive but eye wateringly expensive to buy when newish or to keep on the road with a few years/miles on them. I will stick to my old aging hippo. Toyota 80 series.

Re: Classic pictures Updated 31/01/2021
Agree Land Rover ( Series) peeked in about 1963 IMHO and being outdated ever since.
Had a new 90 Hardtop on a Scottish motorway project in 1990s and it used to be full of water every time it rained.
Also a 110 Station wagon which when used to hammer up M74 to Edinburgh all the door tops started flapping about.
If they were Eastern European they would have been laughed off the park , not cheap either !
Think their current range of posh suv's is bewildering and unfortunately can see them suffering as I believe fashion will swing away from 4x4s .

Good to see the old AEC belonging to Motorways Plant who were based not far from where I live. Great pictures as always Steve. From memory they were running Scania 110's when I was in my teens. Saville Tractors were closer still and I guess the BTD20 was one they may have sold.
