What is it about the English that they wear a collar and tie to operate earth moving equipment and drive tractors. In all the old pics we see they always are collar n tie jobs.

Very true, indeed that's what it was like back then, funny thing fashion; and not a sign of PPE anywhere to be seen.

Publicity shots often have 'someone from the office ' driving so don't think it is always a true representation of the working man !
In fact if you look back thru this thread there are all sorts of sartorial styles

Publicity shots often have 'someone from the office ' driving
I can vouch for this with regards to the Johnson Machinery brochure shots. I did my apprenticeship at Johnsons in the early 70's and remember some of the publicity shots for the newer types of dumper (1K, 2K and 3K) being taken in the yard at the back of the factory. Its over forty years ago and I'm ashamed to say I can't remember any of their names but I recognise the Works Foreman, the company Millwright and the Development shop fitter. Amongst the shop floor staff at Johnsons wearing collar and tie under your overalls or dust coat was not unknown.
