Thanks for your reply, as you say a smart truck, the pic. apparently dates from 1960.
I believe Rolls Royce took over Sentinel in 1956 and truck production would have ceased by 1958, ( before this pic. was taken). The factory then produced RR Diesel engines. They were of course eventually taken over by Perkins.

As far as the engines were concerned, (apart from servicing), on the five generators I mentioned in the earlier post, although most were running 24 hours a day for 12 /14 months we only replaced one pair of head gaskets and an injector pump in all that time.
That was 1963/4.

Yes Fred that's correct Rolls Royce took over Sentinel the factory it became the production line for Rolls diesel engines, I think they went bump in the mid seventies around 1974, they did get out of trouble and production continued they were eventually bought by Perkins who in turn were later purchased by Caterpillar. The last I heard was that the old Sentinel works was being used to re-con Cat engines; don't know if that's still the case.

Yes Jeremy, Perkins were already owned by Massey Ferguson who had rescued them circa 1974 long before Caterpillar took them over.

A couple more pics from the past.

Some more old British built gear, a 19 RB loading a Foden 10 ton dumper and in the foreground is a Chaseside 4.25 yard dumper these came with either a 44hp. Ford 4D or a 60 hp. Perkins P6. Judging by the colour they belonged to Roads Reconstruction who I worked for briefly circa 1961.

A Bristol PD144 brings a drink for a thirsty D9.


A couple of my own machines on our culvert job in Cardiff in the early 80s, a Priestman 108S and a Rolls C6N powered Smith 40/50.

Funny Fred if were not for the drivers the photo with the Foden and Chaseside it would almost looks like a diorama!

This must have been the most challenging road tramp ever in the UK. It couldn't happen these days.

A great picture , not just the The Eucs but cars of the era, Singer Gazelle?, Triumph Herald, Mini with what looks like a blue light on the roof so possibly a van, and an Austin A30/35. Now who can identify the tail fin in the bottom right hand corner?
It was not unusual to tramp motor scrapers between jobs but this pair were brand new and being delivered to their first job.

Tail fin Dumptrucks BMC Farina Oxford or Cambridge.

Cat scrapers BMC Austin/Morris 1100
