Water pumping station

Post #1 by John Gaunt » Sat Jul 05, 2008 10:17 pm

I'm not sure where to put this, the closest seemed to be Earthmoving Equipment although this is Watermoving Equipment :dizzy: . Administrators please move if you wish to.
Went along last week to the biggest drainage pumping station in England at St Germans in Norfolk. The area it drains goes from near Peterbourough in the West and Huntingdon in the South, it's called the "Middle Level" drainage area.
There are 4 pumps each capable of emptying an olympic size swimming pool in 36 seconds, so with all four going, would be an Olympic size pools worth of water every 9 seconds :o
Whan conditions have been really bad, they sometimes run all 4 for a few days at a time, so work out how much water that is !!

Here is a link to an interesting article on the history, and also some info on the new pumping station currently bein g built to replace the existing (1934) one...

Two pumps are electric and two diesel, herewith some pictures of the two diesels....

Just unearthed a few pics of the pump house and purification plant attached to the Hanningfield reservoir near Chelmsford. Taken during a college visit in about 1962. The first pic is of the magnificent Crossley stand-by generator for keeping the water flowing during power cuts.

Thanks John. No, missed out on Maldon, must find an excuse! Good one down here for steam enthusiasts at Brede on the Kent/Sussex boarder - another water pumping station + a Cold War bunker! Two huge triple expansion engines and regular "steam up" days.
