Hi Craig!
Are those "Baklastare" ("Backloader" as they are called in Sweden) seen often in GB?

You still see a few around, usually on farms and in timber yards. So i think they must have been a reasonable amount sold in their time. Never seen one on a construction site , but we don't use loaders much on construction sites ,Back then JCB 3CX and dumpers now its 3te. mini excavators and dumpers.

In their day they pretty much took over as 'the' loading shovels/handlers in sawmills, wood processing factories and in many sandpits that had used the old Brittish makes like Weatherill, Bray, Chaeside and Muir-Hill.

A number went to timber contractors, fitted with a Boughton winch on the back. Even our local glassworks had two handling 'cullet' - glass returned for recycling.

One of their big sales points was the quick interchangeability of bucket and attachments which were sensibly offered as a package. Oh, and their reliability. :)

We knew them as the 'preying mantis'!

This one got a little hot at a sawmill in the Highlands.

It was a fierce fire as you can see and quickly engulfed the whole machine. The operator was desperate to retrieve something from the cab (lunch bag??) using the length of timber you see him with, and despite another guy trying to get him away kept at it despite the fire and small explosions.

The fire brigade turned up (they had a fair way to come) just as one of the front tyres exploded! Nothing much was left of the machine.

Note the Austin Allegro on the road behind.
