Ford A-62 wheel loader?

Post #1 by Robban_C » Sat Jul 19, 2008 3:42 pm

Hi!

I have been searching for a while for a used wheel loader, partly because it sometimes might be handy at the jobs I do and partly because my old Ferguson 3165 "home tractor" (MF 3165, Poor Ferguson) is in quite bad condition and finally because that MF does not lift more than 1/2 ton without losing its traction because it is so light in the rear end.
So I have been searching for a wheel loader such as a Lundberg 342/343 or a Volvo 4200/4200B and then I found this ad on a Swedish site:
http://www.blocket.se/vi/17201531.htm?ca=12_s

The text in the ad basically says this:
Diesel injection pump renovated for 16 000 SEK (about 1700 euro) in 2006.
Brakes need renovating as they are "non existent".
Good tires 70-80% without any cracks etc.
Four way loader lever with a 3:rd hydraulic function and a hydraulic quick hitch through a 6/2-valve.
9543 hours on the clock.
The sign says:
Tractor number: RS 02533
Model: FZ 4 11 V
Hydraulic pump: B 50
Engine: OH 20 A
Front Axle: 1 A 16 B
Transmission: 80 D 8
Rear axle: 1 A 14 B
Build date:

Build date are missing.

Pallet forks, plain and toothed bucket is available.

The quick hitch is the one we call "Stora BM" ("Big BM" where BM is for Volvo BM) here in Sweden, that is the standard quick hitch on almost all wheel loaders here.
They do not say if the tools are included in the price.
The price is about half the price of a 4200 but this machine needs new brakes.

So my questions for you now is:
1. How big are those? Width, height, lifting capacity, weight.
2. Are they reliable?
3. What type of transmission do they have?
4. How long do they last?
5. What about spare parts availability? I know that the answer might be different from country to country.
6. Do the loader lift the forks parallell to the ground all way up?
7. Any weak points? Anything else that I should be aware of?
8. Does anyone know the construction of the brakes? Discs/drums, hydraulic or pressurized air etc?

Hi Robban,

Can't say I know very much about these Ford wheel loaders but I would of thought that this machine could be a good buy if the price is right ;)

It certainly looks to be in excellent condition for it's age

There was a thread with a A64 in it here's the link if you haven't seen it already ...

The A62 had a 4 cyl turbo 97 BS hp Ford engine in it (a-la Ford 7600)

With the date codes you've got I'd say its something around 1981.
Ford's idea for date codes was year, month signified by the alphabet (a=January) and then day of the month

So using the transmission component [80 D 8] as a guide I'd say it was produced 8th April 1980

It seems that the seller probably has found a buyer. :(
I might have to look for a Volvo 4200 instead. Better machines (at least i Sweden from a spare parts point of view) but at twice the price.

Nick, thanks for the A-64 link. I had forgotten about it. :dizzy:

Richard, thank you for the info. It is much appreciated although it probably will not be a deal with that machine.

We have a 1983 555 loader backhoe. It is in deacent condition and is reliable. However it's not really up to too much activity. We use it daily on light duty but if we needed it to make money on hire,it wouldn't be up to it.Small, under powered engine and hyd leaks everywhere.
Don't buy it unless you are just going to play abit with it.

This loader sold for £3000 at a local auction today despite lots of black smoke from the exhaust, but in general it looked tidy.
