The first Cat loader I worked on.

This is the very first Caterpillar traxcavator that I worked on in 1976. A 951 with side tip that was operated by BR for track renewal work. Photo was taken of it in the yard at Radyr , Nr Cardiff. The workshop was just down the sidings.

It has a slight bow in it.Those departmental wagons are years old.Designs predate BR. They could carry 25 ton.Wagons were matched with machines. The wagons also had drums of oil and diesel strapped on them to top up the machines. We had a 10 RB face shovel on one wagon along with Hymac's and JCB 110's I wish I had taken photos of the stuff we worked on in those days

My family has a long history with Swindon works, three generations infact. They had the kit for every job and it was all kept in house. You could get anything made there if you knew the right people..!
I only live 5 miles from the former works and when the hooter used to go they would say the whole village rattled with the kit that came from there..:-)

When I worked there I remember the hooter and the hundreds of workers on bikes coming up Rodbourne road exit the end of their shift.A great works packed with skill. Best year of my working life at Swindon
I am still on the rail, had to attend a loco in trouble at Upton Nervet goods loop yesterday, then on to Hinksey, Oxford on another job.Clocked up 273 miles in the van.Good weather though.Off again this morning

Thanks for putting that documentory up, have not seen it for ages.. Got it on VHS somewhere  If only they knew what was around the corner...! I certainly remember the end of shift at the tunnel entrance, we used to wait there for my gramp to come out. I will never forget that smell of oil from the tunnel, it still smells the same now.
My great grandad, both gramps and my mother worked there, as did my wife's great grandad, her father and her uncle. So as you can imagine I've seen and heard a lot about the place. I take it you worked on the loco side of things then?

I cover the WR on loco and wagon call outs and incidents these days.Cover a large area ,and do a 1000 miles per week on average.
I spent my first years training at Swindon, Dean street B R apprentice school. I was in a railway hostel at 56 Bath road, Old town Swindon. We had a reunion at the museum last year. You may have seen it on TV.
My boss at the training school was Roy Hazell, with instructors Jack Packer. Graham Howell and Jack Lucker, Joe Whittle and Jack Bevan.I used to spend my dinner hour in the loco scrapyard lol There is a Swindon Apprentice Faceboock page
Happy days
