Cat / Trackson were making tracked shovels way before Joe made any earthmoving kit, so not sure about that. If said at all could it have been referring to the rear engined machine?

JCB apparently sent Caterpillar a scale model of a JCB crawler loader saying: '' Congratulations. Imitation is the highest form of flattery'' when CAT introduc their own rear engined hydrostatic drive models.

Dunno about chickens and eggs, but I do know about the IH/Hough Model 12 Payloader, in production from 1956-1962. Not hystat, but the engine was in the right place. Caterpillar bought one from IH.

This Poclain is a new beast to me. Anyone know any more?
