This Manitou is a new beast to me. Anyone know any more?

Matbro invented and patented the pivot steer system or wheel loaders and collected royalties from IH and Cat to name but two but are now virtually forgotten. The Matthews brothers owned many patents and are said to have made far more from licencing their use by others than from selling the complete machines that they manufactured. I'm sure that someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that their back-hoe loader the Matbro Mantis preceded the similar machines from both Whitlock and JCB.

I can vividly remember selling the very last JCB 114 crawler loading shovel to the International Harvester Co at Doncaster around 1980ish.Leibherr also launched their own version with hydrastatic drive soon after this.

Hi Brian,
Do you mean Poclain :?: :?
Picture below of the Hough 12 from 1957 :!: :!:
Eimco also had a rear engined machine early on.

Thanks, Fred, had a bit of a brainf**t there. Typo corrected on original post now. I'd forgotten the Eimcos. Did the Poclain make it into production, and what size was it?

There were two CMC (Poclain) track loaders, C11 and C21 both launched in the earliest 70's. Not the best products by Poclain. I'm sorry Brian, I have not specifications but the buckets capacity should be something between 1 and 2 cubic meters...

You can follow the restoration of a C11 at http://photostp.free.fr/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=6850

I think Deutz designed and sold rear engined ones before Poclain or JCB: models DL1200P, DL1250P or DL1300 to name a few.

But as said before I think the pioneer rear engine track loader was the Hough H12 launched in 1955. Afterwards Deutz, JCB, CMC, Caterpillar, Liebherr, Dresser, Komatsu,... I think.

Just goes to show there's always something new to learn in this game. I only heard of the Poclain on here recently, and the Deutz, well blow me sideways! Did anyone not build a rear-engined hystat?

Thanks for the great pictures & info..
I believe Brian is correct..the H12 won the race by a margin.
I still like the look of them too.I'm aware of at least one guy in Canada restoring one...
I think the Eimco came a little later..
