Hi,

I have only got an extract from a TD6 manual for the steering clutches and it showed the use of the clamp type compressor so that is what I did. I take your point that using the bolts would have been much easier but not having ever tackled a steering clutch before I was reluctant to just screw a long bolt into it not knowing what it may be bearing against. Now that I have dismantled the clutches I can see where the bolts go and so needless to say that is how I shall compress the clutches when it comes to installing them.
Thank you for your concern and suggestions, with hindsight I should have probably have asked first but no harm done and we learn by our mistakes. Incidentally the clamps work but are a bit fiddly to fit and tighten up.

Thanks Simon.

Hi Simon,
Some of the early T6 /TD6 crawlers were'nt drilled for the compression bolts, hence the Clamp type compressor.
You will probably be aware by now that the bolts are 7/16 UNC. (5/8 AF spanner).
From memmory they are about 2-1/4" long and need to have a spiggot turned on the end to reduce the diameter to about a 1/4" , again from memmory the spiggot is about 3/8" long. That should work anyway.
Hope this helps if you didn't already know.
Fred

P.S. Do not forget to tighten the bolts a little at a time or you will break the plate that they push on.

Hi

I have made some bolts to Fred's description and I have to agree that they work much easier than the clamps. I have cleaned up and reassembled one of the clutches and it seems pretty good, I'll get my son to do the other one. We have now got the engine parts required so should be able to start rebuilding that soon as well.

Simon
