Hi Wray,

Sorry to disagree with my friend Martyn but I don't think the problem is the length of the bolt.
The bolts require a spiggot to be turned on the ends.
I have given my bolts away  and can't check the actual size till next week.
Here is a sketch showing what is required. The measurements are from memmory only, and that's not so good at my age.
Hope this helps, good luck.

Just zoomed in on the end of the bolt, just noticed that the ends have not been turned down.Notice the threads look flat in your photo. My bolts are 2 inches long
Found my bolts in the garage this morning.
Are you around next week Fred, got most of the week off and will be up your direction. Will bring the Fowler decals up to you

Fred, thanks for the sketch.
Should the bolt threads be 7/16 unc instead of 3/8?
There is not any 3/8 threads on the clutch as I can find, only 7/16.
I will make a set of bolts tomorrow 7/16 unc X 2" per the sketch and Martyn's measurement.

Thanks
Wray

Hi Wray,
The bolts could well be 7/16 . I said the memory might let me down.  It's all of 30 years since I worked on the Drotts

I would tap out the holes in the plate before fitting the compression bolts.
Picking up a load of clutch spares shortly when I get time to get down the south west.
I will be overhauling my steering clutches in my TD6 when I get it back home.

Hi Wray,
The bolts are definitely 7/16 UNC . Like Fred its thirty years since I worked on these machines, but working for an IH dealer for twenty years I don't think I'II ever forget steering clutches, it was a regular job.

Hello Peter
They are a pain to do.I have been asked by a few people
now that have stuck clutches, caused by the machines layed up for a long time. Was thinking of coating the splines with copper slip compound on the next set I do.What do you think ?
Yes they are 7/16" bolts by 2" long

Hello Martyn,
I would'nt use copperslip when building these clutches.I've seen it used in vehicle clutches and it tends to go hard with the heat and all the dust and muck sticks to it and you end up with a sticky gooey mess. I think the best way to stop them sticking if the machine is not going to be used for a while would be to tie the steering levers back ,OK on BTD6s and B100s etc but on B series machines I think you would just have to run them every now and then, hope this helps.

Thanks Peter
I tied back the levers on the Cat D2 5 j I used to have but they still stuck,The best thing to do I guess is to give them a run back and forth and slew them a few times every month
Martyn
PS Have you heard of a firm called A E Allaways based around the Feltham area of Middlesex ?
I had a IH 125 that was owned by that company.
