I think it may have been for a front mounted pto pump to drive the mixer?

Yes looks like hydraulic drive to mixer.

Craig these were from my part of the world and I can recall seeing them on a regular basis around the roads of the Black Country.

Looks a beauty but even as a kid I could not believe the were selling LAD cabs in 1971.

I started work in 1977 and RMC were still using them. Although most of their mixers were Ford D Series by then.
