Ford Cargo truck - Is there a comprehensive year and engine list anywhere?

Post #1 by TrevorJ » Wed Jul 09, 2014 3:14 pm

I was inquiring on behalf of a neighbour for a VRS kit that he needed for fixing his truck. I though it should have been not a drama, I mean, most things ... the net usually holds a half decent reference somewhere.

My internet searches sort of hit a brick wall pretty quick, one site indicating that a d1515 engine had 3 different versions and another just the one.

It almost seems like the guys at ford just picked a motor at random and shoved it in with no real system to it.

Anyhow today, I let the local parts people have a go, and they're usually pretty good, as they have a good line on suppliers. After a couple of calls for more info, (yep it's 83 ... er pre September) 7 hours later, it's sorted ... but the engine is said to be 380 and not the 360T which Ford Australia online site seemed to indicate, mind on their site there is no mention of the different engine versions of the same engine.

http://www.engineaustralia.com.au/products/diesel-engine-parts/ford?page=1

So I was just wondering, does that 380 sound right and secondly, is there a pretty good reference somewhere for ford trucks, and their engines, with various versions (like chromed liners etc) by year and engine serial numbers?

No doubt the top gasket kit will come with head bolt tensions, but I wouldn't mind tracking down a workshop manual that includes that engine.

Anyone know a good place to start? The Ford 2700 range Workshop manual I've located is dated 79, a couple of years before Ford used the d1515 in the Cargo. For all I know, the d1515 could have been about since the early 70s.

Thanks in Advance

sorry Trev I cant help in the 1983 truck and bus specs it says 6 cyl 6 ltr 110 kw @ 2400rpm and 481 nm of torque @ 1700 rpm and the Glass's guide for the truck say's 8 cyl 6 ltr 52.5 pu ( I think that this just might add to the problem and there 8 cyl is a typeo ) April 83 ford Cargo add says 130 or 150 series engine so I guess spin the wheel and take a guess good luck

Thanks eseexpete - happened to be where I spotted that 2700 ws manual. Yes a very good page of info.

Yes Paul, that's the thing, there doesn't seem to be any system to what engines were used or an easy way to determine what version of engine is actually in a truck. The neighbour knew at least of all it was a d1515 but the parts supplier in Sydney finally went by the molding number in the block to determine which version of the d1515 it was.

Trev I think all the Aussie Cargos would have come in CKD and unlike the Louisville that I think were of a custom built truck so I would have thought they would be standard but we all no what thought thought I did notice that with different wheel bases the the torque changed from 481 to 487 I think that might be a typo though ?

Might be some more info here.

I think the engine design changed in the early 80s from the Dorset to Dover and apparently parts are not interchangeable between the two series. What I am trying to say is that you need to ID which you have if you are around that early 80s period.

Thanks essexpete, I'd read that as well, but thanks anyhow. I know the truck was put out in May 1983. It should according to "Ford's" site be a Dover 360T engine, but ...

Another interesting tit bit, guessing what applies to 4 cylinders also applies to 6.

http://www.foleyengines.com/resources/tech-tips/identifying-ford-dover-and-dorset-engines

In fact of all the details I could grab from the compliance plate, the d1515 which came via the owner, finally the Sydney supplier was said to determine which of the two possible gasket sets left, for a pre Sept 83 version, either the cast iron liner or chromed ... was by the engine casting number, (826F 6015 EAC) - suggesting further, that the chromed liner version is yet another different block.

Issuing three different blocks the same id number, (such as there is for a d1515) is %^^&%&$(*#@ stupid IMO.

That's what prompted me to inquire, there must be a list somewhere that explains what was done, or at the very least a list of the cast engine id on the block, matching with what "version" of engine it is.

Paul, wikipedia how ever inaccurate it can be, infers that some of those made in the UK were exported to Turkey and Australia.

A good point. I thought it was the engine but it's actually the model. ... I didn't ask the owner how he knew it was a d1515, it's certainly nowhere on the compliance plate or any other tags. The model as per the tag is 83285 ... how d1515 came out to be the same as that.

The facts there's three d1515 variations with 3 separate but same engines with out the bother to define the model further with something like a b and c ...

http://www.precisionintl.com/CategorySearch.aspx?Cat=12&Make=24&Model=D1515

Still the fact the blocks have different casting numbers indicates, 3 separate engines. It's nothing that is obvious looking various info that can be found online. It by rights is a 360T engine, that just happens to have 380 cu in of displacement.

From fords site. page 1 link. I failed to note it was "model series"

Re: Ford Cargo truck - Is there a comprehensive year and engine list anywhere?

Post #10 by TrevorJ » Mon Jul 14, 2014 3:17 pm

An update: When the neigbour pulled the head off I ventured out for a quick look. Apparently 1515 is somewhere there on one of the tags ... I'm going to have to make a habit of taking my glasses with me when I'm looking for engine data. :-)

I also had a quick look though the owners manual sold with it, and was fascinated by the engines listed that "might" be in it ... according to Ford. (There was a mention of a Perkins V8, so that explains that guide I guess) Sadly Ford have porked that book as well, as it didn't list anything bigger than the Dover 150.

Looking at the liners, they didn't look like the ordinary cast iron liner, far too bright IMO and lacking any cross hatching to be seen above the top piston ring position, but nor did they appear to be the brightly chromed liners I remember from older motor bikes.

It seems though the gaskets ordered defined by the engine casting number 826F, match the old one just removed. The head also had a cast number starting with 826F.
