Nicks Blog | Wimpey plant memories

Post #1 by RSS Bot » Tue Apr 13, 2010 4:00 pm

I get a lot of emails from ex-employees of George Wimpey's plant departments and the latest person to get in touch is Mike Ponsonby who worked for department 1 in Hammersmith.

Mike started with Wimpey plant in the Spring of 1968 as a Plant Fitter at the start of the M6 motorway section at Corley, by mid-summer Mike was bringing home £100 net per week which Mike describes as "big bucks in 68". Mike was always up for all the weekend shifts and early morning tractor start-ups, to get lubricants up to working temperature before the shift started around 7am.

One of the machines that he used to work on was a Caterpillar D9G model that was fitted with a ripper and during a trip to Cyprus back in 2007 he came across the same machine which he amazingly recognised the serial number on.
