I just came across this collection of photos from the 1950's. A lot are general views of the site but there are some interesting cranes and lifting rigs. No sign of a hi-viz or hard hat!

that is amazing I had never heard that stonehenge was rebuilt
I wonder why it was done ? Dont think it was the 1950's with some of the hair styles and the piece symbol on the rocks

I've not heard of it being rebuilt either but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to clarify the situation.

Wikipedia suggests that the photos from the link were part of a 1958 restoration. There have been others.
Sort of shock horror reaction or a big hoax but on reflection big stones stood on end are likely to move over time although a little guarded about it being true

Hmm... I seem to have opened a can of worms and this thread has gone off in a direction I didn't expect!
I was only really aware of it after seeing a painting by Constable from the mid 19th century and thinking it looked very different now. It would appear from web surfing that the work took place in four stages from 1901 to 1964.

Different mind set then , now such " restoration" would be considered vandalism.
On a Plant related note ; that is an interesting image of the semi mobile derrick being used to lift on of the cap stones. Suggests a slightly different era from the Sparrows mobile crane in another image.

Yes concrete in a restoration would be frowned now but I expect in that era the work was done with the best intentions.
