Oil or Grease...?

Post #1 by Froglet » Thu Mar 25, 2010 4:51 pm

Well to be more precise, Semi-Liquid Grease.

I was using my JCB 3C MkIII yesterday and found that the action of the rear excavator arm leaves a lot to be desired. It took me several attempts to line the bucket up with the area I wanted to scrape out and then the overall action was VERY jerky.

I've greased all the pins and then checked the small reservoir just behind the King Post to see if the slew reservoir needed topping up (see photo below...)
King Post 2.JPG
- it's the small square plate with a bolt at each corner...

I took the screws out, removed the small dipstick attached to the breather pipe (which promptly snapped but I managed to sort that out in 2 minutes) and realised that the dipstick was completely dry. In fact it had dust on it...

The reservoir seems to contain a small amount of either VERY thick brown oil or semi liquid grease. I've had a search on the forum and apart from the mention of EP90 oil or 'Alfagel' semi liquid grease (can't find that even on Google) I'm not sure if I should be topping this reservoir up with one or the other.

Any suggestions / experiences would be much appreciated. I await your wise words...

PS - The fuel starvation problem mentioned in my last topic has been sorted now. I cleaned the system from tank right through to injection pump and finally got a new fuel filter in. I just need to remember to keep at least 3 gallons of fuel in tank. She revs like a good'un now...

I would pump in E p90 or even engine oil first to try and flush out whatever you have got in there, sound as if its dry.Work it for a while and flush it again.Refill with ep 90 and see if things improve. You may have to use a thicker lubricant if it leaks away.A jerkey action may be that you need hydraulic oil to be topped up.Check your hydraulic oil level.
Last time I worked on a 3c was a while ago.

One semi-liquid grease that you could get hold off easily enough is the stuff that Land Rover specify for the steering swivels on the front axle. Several years ago they gave up trying to keep them oil tight and adopted semi grease.

Available from the usual suspects like Paddocks.....

Thanks once again Julian. No 'Paddocks' here in deepest, darkest France. There is a LR owners club in the Dordogne though so I might give them a try.

Merci encore...
