JCB 3DII hydraulic filter removal

Post #1 by mambo » Sat Jul 13, 2019 11:43 am

Anyone know how to remove the filter housing? Mines in there solid

Image

Not sure if it’s threaded (assuming it is not, due to little t shaped thing). I’ve loosened the bolt as described in manual

Image

Any ideas on removing? I’ve tried hitting it wiggling it swearing at it, none of which had any effect :dizzy:

Also there is a seal on the retaining bolt anyone know what it is? I’m guessing a Dowty washer

Ok as a follow up

I just needed a bigger hammer

To help anyone else in this position

Park machine with all rams extended as in pic A and install ram prop B

Image

Loosen bolt at bottom of housing (1 1/2” socket on a 4 foot bar was needed)
Only back bolt out 20-25mm at this stage, you’ll lose oil now (I lost a good 10 litres)
Tapping the housing back and forth with a sledge hammer freed it off.
The bolt will not come right out of the housing because there’s an o ring inside so whole housing filter and bolt must be lowered down and away (mine was still half full of oil so it’s fairly heavy)
Luckily mine had that T shaped lug on (don’t think this is OEM) so it was easy to man handle with it hanging from an engine crane

Job in the end turned out to be about an hours work

Parts used
581/01801 filter
G83/2 seal
1406/0031 bolt seal (3/4” BSP Dowty washer)

Hi Mambo, great job. I’ll be doing this with my Same make and model in a few weeks.
How much oil went into it to fill it?

Thanks

Not quite sure Richie as I had a slight accident
Because I didn’t know how to remove the housing and was worried about breaking something I left it with the bolt slackened 25mm while I went to do research, when I left it was just a slight trickle
1/2 hour later when I returned the bucket that was underneath had overflowed, and as it was on grass I have no way of knowing how much I lost.

Anyway to cut a long story

The housing probably holds a little over 5 litres as indicated in the manual and if you mess about like I did your tank will siphon back into the filter housing ( as undoubtably happened to me, even though I had the matching as illustrated)

After I actually removed the housing ( which was still full) no further siphoning occurred.

So keep time to a minimum from when you drop the bolt to when you drop the housing and you’ll only lose 5 litres or so

Hope my ramblings help :?

Makes perfect sense. Basically do it as fast as possible is what I’m hearing.
Myself and the brother are doing it Friday. I’ll feedback how we get on. Fingers crossed we have a big enough hammer. :D
Thanks again.

Hi Mambo,
Hope you don’t mind me putting this here but we just complete the same job as you.
We had to remove the U-bolt and backed off the nut below to help drain the tank and take some weigh out. We backed it off and rocked it until it stopped leaking repeating the process until we were almost out and then just dropped it.
Once it was dropped all draining ceased.
A few images of what we did.

The area to be tackled. (Need to sort out the hinge)
Image

State of the filter that was in it. :(
Image

This was on the filter and has the o-ring on the small washer.
Image

This is the bolt with the spring on it to hold the cap and o-ring in place and seal it. (Small sup of oil escaped  )
Image

Onto the reassembly. Bolt in, spring on
Image

Washer o-ring on and plate that sits into the filter on.
Image

Filter in next and ready to go
Image

About to bolt it all back together.

I call that a successful day and thanks so much to Mambo for all the assistance and starting this thread right on time.

You’re filter looked exactly like mine and in similar condition, only difference was those white rings of glue or whatever were falling off

Mine didn’t have the u-bolt :eh:
