JIC couplings

Post #1 by hair bear » Fri Oct 06, 2023 10:39 pm

Is there a trick to get JIC couplings to seal?
Just changed a deceased ram and the old couplings won't seal to the new ram. The ram fittings are identical from what I see but they just won't stop dripping.
Ideas anyone?

Have you perhaps over tightened? Annoying, but I wonder if there is slight damage?

Same as BSP (apart from the obvious differences). The sealing relies on the mating of the conical surfaces. If it's weeping, either the faces aren't mating correctly or the contact pressure is light.
If you are confident the thread isn't binding or similar, I'd loosen the nut slightly and with a tool on the ferule, work the hose back and forth as you tighten the nut. Hopefully you'll that'll reshape the mating surfaces.

Ok, so a closer look revealed that on the old ram the union nut has a couple of threads visible when tight and sealed (just refitted it to check). On the new ram the sockets appear slightly deeper and the nut is tight and threadbound before the union seals. I've contacted the supplier for suggestions so we'll see what happens.

A quick update, and no further forward with this. The supplier was quick to respond and requested depth measurements of the ram sockets - no explanation of exactly how one would measure it taking into account the ram surface is a curved elipse and the base of the fitting is conical. A high precision screwthread depth micrometer is always in my tractor tool box...

Hi hair bear. Can't you ask the ram supplier to send you some new couplings to suit the ram fittings and then have them grafted onto your existing hoses . That's assuming you have a bit of movement in the existing hoses ? Might be better than a constant drip ?

It's worth a thought. Unfortunately the toys have had to take a back seat for a couple of weeks but hopefully I'll get back to it soon.
