Have examined the picture closely, afraid I cannot see where the machine 'splits' to allow the articulation. It does appear to be a standard 4CX with the prototype cab.

'Maxtrac' refers to the rear axle, which I believe was made by JCB themselves in Wrexham, originally seen on the 'Powertrain' (the last) versions of the 3C mk3, which were sold as a taste of things to come with the 3CX.

Perhaps not the last of the 3CX grey cab as it does not have the 5 stud rear axle?

if you study the B&W photo you can see steel pipes rising by the headlights ,they are also on the colour one too where it is driving under the other machine ;)

 Difficult to say, there is a grab rail, just by the loader mountings on the black and white photo, but not on the colour pic, but there seems to be no gap on colour photo............ Maybe Julian could help out here

I still stand by earlier comments, JCB didn't put the articulated design into production as they were unhappy with the machine's stability, instead preferring to pursue the equal size wheels/4 wheel steer concept. (Although I'm happy to be corrected!)

if you look at the steps on the colour photo they are very narrow the same as in the B&W photo ,no need for this if it was all wheel steer ,they would be a normal full width
also the loader arms are the same very straight with all the bucket linkage in the same place in both photos

There certainly does not look enough clearance to turn the front wheels but then again the ordinary 4 looks tight.

The very last photo yes. The colour one doesn't show an artic steer 4CX any more than I'm pope Gregory the ninth
