1982 3cx 4x4 jcb with a perkins 4236 engine

Post #1 by jumbo747123 » Tue Jul 09, 2013 3:04 pm

When i use my jcb there is black smoke coming from the exhaust and the engine breaths heavily beneath the engine under load or workind for a period of time Does this mean that the engine needs a complete overhaul?or can there be an easier option? Does anyone know?

From the symptoms that you have described your engine may have worn rings and bores because it does sound like you have plenty of engine 'blow by' where the compressed air passes the worn rings and enters the crankcase.
I would however check that your crankcase breather is clear before you consider any drastic rebuild action.

Thankyou both for your replies .The machine starts without any problems from cold she is a bit sluggish expecially as she as not got a turbo. She doesant seem to be burning any oil.On the subject of engine oil what oil should i use in this engine?and is it easy to clear the crankcase breather?

Clive, I have never worked on this type of engine so I do not know exactly what the crankcase breather looks like, they can become gummed up with burnt oil and carbon which leads to excess crankcase pressure. A workshop manual or advice from another CMN member will help you to locate the breather and tell you the correct oil to use.

If it starts well and does not burn oil I would not be rushing for a rebuild. A good service oils and filters, breather like Jem has said and possibly get the injectors serviced. If not perhaps an injector cleaner.

15w 40 would be first choice for oil but 10w 30 will also be fine. The engine breather is on the left side of the rocker cover. It's just a short pipe straight out of the cover and entering into a rubber down pipe.If it's breathing heavy,it's unlikely to be blocked, and will most probably have worn or broken piston rings.
In relation to the black smoke, have you checked the air filters are clean?(inner and outer). It might be worth having the injectors checked out too.
