How Difficult Is It To Overhaul The Brakes?

Post #1 by mikefoxo » Mon Mar 25, 2013 10:40 pm

We have an old JCB 3 Mk II and the brakes are nearing the end (about 20 years ago :D ). How much of a job would it be to overhaul them? Can you go in through the top like with the clutch?

If you take the floor plates up the brakes are at the top of the half shaft housings just undo the 9/16 af headed bolts on the end plates slacken the adjusters off (3/4 af ) there are 2 brake plates with the expander in between them,It's not too much of a hard job you might need some easing oil to get the clevis pins out.

I did the brakes on my 3c a couple of year's ago and is well worth doing, if you go on the Leyland/Nuffield forum there are quite a few thread's on brakes

As suggested above. Give all the brake shafts a good grease whilst you are underneath as mine was seized solid when I went into fix my brakes!

Remember that asbestos was about 20/30 years ago, so wear a mask, etc when cleaning out the housing. I had a lot of dust in mine.
