found water has been mixing with my transmission oil due to knackered cooler (88 grey cab, syncro box)
seeing as I dont put the tranny under much load, no road work or long trips, do you think I could by pass the cooler for the time being until I find a decent second hand one??
cheers

3CX running without oil cooler
Re: 3CX running without oil cooler
I wouldnt run the machine without the cooler, however I think you may block the damaged paths with copper welding and use it temporaly. but my advice is to fit a seperate oil cooler front of the radiator and bypass water hose. That will prevent any future damages could happen to the round tranmission cooler due to uneven or buckled universal joint which located under the cooler.
having said that sometimes you may have to fit a small fan behind the grill at a slow speed if you are running in a hot country.
hope this make any sense.

Re: 3CX running without oil cooler
it does make sense, thanks king post
as you have said, the UJ for the hydraulic pump has beaten the pipe over time resulting in fractured pipes within the cooler
had not thought of bypassing some of the internal copper pipes trouble is identifying which was are ruptured, i dont want to fill it with new tranny fluid (another problem getting proper JCB fluid ) for it to all be ruined again.
do you have any method suggestions for blocking the right pipes??
and do you think I could use normal red tranny fluid instead of the recommended 10w gear oil??
its a grey cab 338442 with synchro shuttle box
eta: thinking about it, if you ran water through the oil side whilst holding verticaly it should only drain out the mini copper water tubes that are effected, keep soldering hole by hole, apply more and more pressure to the water untill no more water appears from mini copper tubes, maybe work

Re: 3CX running without oil cooler
Kerniki, mate its easy to identify the demaged path by using this technique.
Things you need
compressor, aduate bowl or basin, water etc
1. block either oil intake or exit of the cooler.
2. connect air hose of the compressor to the other oil entry/exit of the cooler
3. fill the bowl with water
4. put the cooler in the bowl
5. release air gradualy, as the cooler is in the water if its leaking internaly you can see buble coming out of busted paths
6. identify them and block them with cooper flux
but not advisable to blcok not more 1/4 of paths in the cooler.
I done this it worked OKey
good luck

Re: 3CX running without oil cooler
thanks kingpost, did as you said & all went well & was quite pleased with my efforts but its completely gone, its leaking everywhere
hunting down a new one now, anyone have the part number? nowhere to be seen on my unit
there is one on ebay that look exactly the same but i wana be sure, plus the part number in the advert doesn't marry with any JCB numbers

Is your oil cooler the same as on a 3C Powertrain? If so I may be of help.

Re: 3CX running without oil cooler
Looks very similar to the power steering coolers fitted to big block MerCruiser's, but they're not ally, temp sensor goes in on the left there! Mark
