hi guys,

changing the gearbox oil again as i think its lost a bit over time which has resulted in it being reluctant to go in or out of gear, I've drained the gearbox only this time and only 9 litres has come out, combined converter and gearbox is 15l i think, what do we think the gearbox alone should be roughly?

I did an operating course on the 3CX in '88 & remember being told that the early ones had ATF in the torque box & later ones had gone to SAE 30 in this box, so to check with the owner which fluid he had in his. There was a filler / dipstick under the bonnet on the left just in front of the cab front windscreen. The fluid on the early (white cab) 3CX was checked with the converter in gear & at stall so engine ticking over & front bucket against a stop - a wall or stump. The 4 speed gear box was on the rear axle - driven by a short open shaft. I seem to remember the filler dipstick for this was in the cab -by the seat pivot
I know they went from the Leyland 4/98 engine to a Perkins about '84 - not sure if this had any bearing on the converter fluid changing. Sorry this was so long ago, I ended up running & part owning a very late manual 3C mk 3 for years - so sort of went backwards - but got to like the manual model much better
