Hi Ken1953

Those numbers are so close to mine

Mine are:

jcb serial # 109278 blank
tractor #384b 192903
engine #23708

So your must have a torque converter, I am guessing from the 3 at the end of the JCB serial #

Any way check if three injectors or four, that is a good start.

Hopefully one the more knowledgable posters will reply.

I would love to know the year of mine :-)

Have you any photos?
John

just reading the manual and the 38dt is identifiable by serial number and the 4/98 is a number prefix does anyone know what this means?

I think 4 is 4 cylinder and 98 is developed torque, 4 /98 but I may be wrong

You can download the manual for the 38TD and 4/98NT here

engine serial number is 498TBAK124, got the head kit on order from a tractor supply company here in St.John's, got the water pump and gasket kit for 160, JCB dealer wants 250 just for the gaskets.

The reason i am taking the head off is that she is putting compression in the rad and there was no thermostat. Put a new thermostat in and still the same problem. As soon as i start the engine the radiator pressurizes.

4/98 is 4 cylinder and 98mm bore. 3.8 is engine capacity in litres. The engines in early mark 2 3c's,were known as 3.8 BMC which were 4/99 ie 4 cyl and 99 mm bore.Later mk 2 and onward to mk 3 and 3cx had the newer engine-known as 4/98. (Although,am nearly sure they were around 3.8 litre too!).
