Hi,
Yes, not only the Leylands, This was a a problem with many engines.
If we had to run without a thermostat in an emergency I got over the problem by fitting a thermostat housing gasket with a smaller centre hole. This restricted the flow and directed sufficient water through the rad. to keep the engine from overheating.
I hope the thermostat solves your problem.
I have had touble with these Leylands on more than one occasion, where they have over heated and the block has distorted and prevented the top of the liner sealing.
The bore at the top and bottom of the block become missaligned , the liner is tilted slightly and will not seal.
If the liner protrusion is carefully checked and is not even all round this could be the problem.
I have found no satifactory fix for this condition.
Fred

Fitted Thermostat today, and now the engine runs at a constant 82 all day
