86/87 3CX crankshaft

Post #1 by rosbif » Wed Oct 06, 2010 3:16 pm

Been trying to get round to this for some time so your reminders were quite timely

I seem to need a crankshaft for my machine as the current one is badly gouged-' something happened'' a couple of years ago and we had to remove a piston -whatever 'happened' cut lumps out of the crank and I've been wanting to do something about it ever since. The machine still runs but is now lacking in power very badly and vibrates a lot at low revs.

1st question. Is a crank ever too badly gouged to be reground?
2 If I need another crankshaft does it have to be from a 3CX or could it be from another application?
3 Where would I find another shaft ?
4 Do I really need another engine?

Hi David,

Welcome to CMN  as a former crankshaft grinder I can tell you that most cranks (Cat aside) can have 0.030" ground off them but any engine recon company would almost certainly tell you if the crank was salvageable just by looking at it.
I don't know where you would get another crank from, I would of thought that another engine would be a better bet in the long run.

Jeremy
