Whitlock hydraulic pump

Post #1 by old leaky Whitlock » Thu Aug 12, 2010 6:15 pm

I have just bought an old Whitlock digger , think its 1965 using a Ford 4000 diesel tractor , dont know where to start on it or maybe approach should be to repair things as they break ? The digger would probably have been going to the scrap yard so its well worn . Main concern is the hydraulic pump (powering the front loader and back actor) seems to be making a noise , it not anything like as loud as the engine but I can hear it whining and thinking it may be about to give up. Have topped up with 46 oil , the digger works ok . The pump is mounted on the front bumper area and has part number S022200301 on the right hand end . I have been able to get a 'shop manual' for the Ford 4000 tractor but nothing on the Whitlock conversion , does anyone have an exploding diagram of the hydraulic pump on one of these ?

Hi Bernard welcome to CMN, the pump will be a gear pump and sounds like it may well be shot.
If you need it repairing I can recommend somebody so pm me.

It might be worth checking any suction filters or strainers.

Jeremy , thanks pm sent .

Pete , thanks for the advice , there is a large approx 3L capacity filter on the high pressure side of the hydraulic pump , will check through the pipes for any more .

As essexpete said, check the suction side of the pump. May have a gauze filter in the tank on the outlet to the pump. Had a JCB 818 that was cavitating badly, on closer inspection the filter in the hydraulic tank was so choked it was starving the pump of oil, and the suction hose (from tank to pump) had collapsed. Clean filter, and new hose, it was a different machine.

Craig , heres a photo , whoever painted it blue did a very thorough job , they even painted the inside surface of the gauze filter in the hydraulic oil reservoir ( goes at least three inches down the tube ) ,even I know that was not very clever of them .

Nick , yes its cavitating , there is no filter on the outlet from the reservoir tank to the pump inlet so I am planning to replace the main filter thats the first thing the pump feeds to on the high pressure side , dont know if this will help as the cavitation is definitely happening on the inlet to the pump .

Thanks for that Craig , its definitely the same profile and looks like the original colour should have been yellow , so its a model 308 .

Hi Bernard, their model numbering has always seemed a bit complex, but I think the very similar looking 105 was based on the Ford 3000 .
I will dig out and post the reverse of the 308 brochure which has some spec. on
