Re: New JCB 3CXL loading shovel
Hi Julian
Great list
Never knew there were so many loader / shovel variants produced by JCB.
How popular were the early loader models compared to the original backhoe models ?

Re: New JCB 3CXL loading shovel
Certainly the loaders variants were more popular in the old days primarily because these days there is so more wider choice of machines available. With the development and better acceptance of hydrostatics there are more compact wheel loaders available on the market but also skid steers loaders have increased in size and Telehandlers which have better reach and loader over height.
We have had a Loader variant of the 3CX (P21) available since it was launched in 2002, but have'nt actively marketed it and the sales have been few. We sold and All Wheel Steer (AWS) variant of the 3CX back in 2007 to Ireland and I belive is working in Hilsborouogh Agriculture College. Last summer we had a customer wanting to replace his old New Holland Loader and due to the counterweight being manufactured in China ,it has a long lead time.
Having built another one it was a good opportunity for us to market it to all our dealers and since the communication to the dealers this week we have already got interest from our Middle East dealers.
We also supply Loader versions to Southern Europe but instead of fitting a counterweight, the rear side frame and stabilisers are retained from a standard machine and specialist companies fit hitches. We also supply the worlds largest marble cutter equipment specialist with this spec machine and they fit large hydraulic cutters to the rear. Attached are a few pics for interest

Re: New JCB 3CXL loading shovel
Below are a few pics, most of the machines sold are for specialist applications and are fitted with attachments. Other uses have been in airports for tow tugs which the 2CX is expectionally good at due to its high tractive effort cira 40 tonne.
Hope they are of interest

Great post Julian
and thank you for giving us a detailed account of the JCB loading shovels ...
I am intrigued in the Scandanavia boat tug, where do the hose's go to coming off the back of the machine ?

Re: New JCB 3CXL loading shovel
Julian for that insite into the variations of different markets and semi 'custom machines' offered for nich operations.
I assume with JIT production of mixed models going down the line its easier to offer 'custom variants' these days then to keep the customers happy rather than taking a std machine and the dealers adapting it latter at extra cost
Has the boat trailer got hydrailic driven axles like the RNLI trailers used with the semi submersible crawlers built by Clayton engineering or is it several auxuilary services to operate a lifting frame, as the driver looks to have a few control levers there ?

Re: New JCB 3CXL loading shovel
Producing customised machines creates a lot of work for me and my team as very often it will involve designing bespoke hydraulics and parts which our suppliers demand long lead times for non standard production parts.
With changes to the Machinery Directive, which came into force on 1st January 2010, this requires manufacturers to hold 'Technical Files' for all machines including one off bespoke changes. This means documentation of risk assesments, test and development reports, component suppliers sign off reports, updates to operators manuals, Standard Operating Procedures for production ie. how to manufacture and assemble etc. Most importantly it requires what is known as a Declaration of Incorporation this therefore means that if the machine is not supplied as a complete machine it is not CE marked and cannot be put to use until it has this which is the responsibility of the company carrying out subsequent modifications or the end user.
JCB have around 25 different models of BHL more than any other manufacture and a huge number of options with approx. 1200 derivaties to suite the different models which there are approx 300 different builds of! If a customer would like something to suite a certain application then we always try to do what we can, I guess this is another reason why JCB have been so successful with their BHL and sold over 400,000 !
With regards to the boat trailer I believe it has got hydraulic driven axles and also has several auxilliary circuits to operate the lifting frame, another pic attached for reference.

That is what Joe Bamford was all about, always trying new things, never sitting still, listening to the customer and flexible with it.
Is this Machinery Directive a EU Directive or our own ?
and thank you for showing the whole of the Scandinavian tug

Re: New JCB 3CXL loading shovel
Yes the Machinery Directive is an EU Directive. Another requirement is called En474 which is referred to the in Machinery Directive, which although is not mandatory, it is what is recomended for machinery safety and if a manufacturer chooses not to follow a requirement it should ensure it mitigates the risk by means of another technical solution.
Its all very complicated and what our colleagues in JCB Research spends many hours understanding and interpreting for us Product Managers. A requirement which came into force sometime ago was that when using powered attachments on the excavator end which have the risk of flying debris, the manufacturer must protect the operator. All screens on the 2CX have laminated glass and on the Midi CX, 3CX and 4CX have a 3M film applied ,which is used on commercials building for blast protection. This makes the rear screen bullet proof and therefore protects the operator from any flying debris such as when using breakers.
