Mate, I need to get down to second or even first gear on any incline. 4th gear is strictly for flat surfaces on my (non-turbo) machine with 5,000hrs. I find the lack of driving thrust frustrating ... but haven't confirmed the exact cause yet. I reckon my top speed on the flat is about 20 kmph

Could you possibly be expecting too much on-road performance from ~ 30 year old 'tractor' that weighs around seven tons?

I thought possibly the horn, but it doesn't work, so another fix...
yeah on an incline, the revs stay relatively as they were and the speed dies

That sounds fairly normal Andy. There's something not right with UnclejakeNZ's above mind you. There's are different torque converters for different applications,ie they are colour coded but I don't know much more than that...Maybe his has the wrong one fitted?
My older white cab will take most hills on the road in 4th gear but the speed will eventually be reduced to a crawl if I don't drop to third, but the engine will never stall. Also in say a hill in a field, where it'll be grabbing for grip in the soil,if whatever gear you're in is too high, the machine will stop moving but the engine will still maintain some revs. It's just the way a torque converter works.

Yeah, there's something wrong with my driving thrust for sure, but we haven't been able to look at the shuttle system yet. We've been waiting to solve a sudden low engine oil pressure issue that popped up after a head gasket change so I haven't used the machine for two months (3psi at idle and ~ 20 psi at working revs)

I'm not having much luck and got badly 'bitten' by the previous owner myself. The good news is all parts seem to be available, but the bad news is that they can take two months to get here...

To answer my own question and to help those who didn't know, the casings do just unbolt and pull apart. Great result that the bolts could be renewed with just splitting one half.
