Blck cab 3CX - is the engine oil filter the same as transmission filter?

Post #1 by UnclejakeNZ » Tue Jul 04, 2023 7:00 am

Hi folks, and thanks in advance for your advice.

Short story:
The machine is a 1988(?) with non turbo Perkins engine and is in a paddock, on an island a two hour flight away from any service agents or parts suppliers

I have trans problems for which I ordered a new transmission filter

Before the transmission could be looked at I saw symptoms of a blown headgasket so I ordered a headset, new stretch bolts, thermostat and waterpump. The parts arrived from Australia into New Zealand and were then sent by air to me on Chatham Island. I have been unable to use the machine for weeks so am desperate to put her to work tomorrow to bury several rotting bulls (I have the day off)

There's a young diesel mechanic on this island who has replaced the HG for me outside in the wind and freezing rain (the HG was very, very blown and by the pitting in the head has been damaged since well before my ownership)

I want to use the machine tomorrow. I forgot to order an engine oil filter with the head gasket etc.... but the mechanic didn't know that and saw my transmission filter in the box this afternoon so he fitted that to the engine (not his fault)>

Am I safe to use the 3CX tomorrow morning?

Oh dear. I'm unsure how the mechanic got it on then. He said it spun on fine and he's obviously run the engine since. Thanks Agrimax.

In slightly related news.... water into #3. Head a bit pitted above the piston crown. I figure the HG has been leaking for a fair while.

To update the thread: My parts supplier has told me the trans filter (actually the shuttle filter sorry) and the engine oil filter are the same part numbers so I used the machine yesterday, and despite the low oil pressure light coming on at idle (and weak driving thrust to the wheels) I had no mechanical issues.

A set of new filters are on their way regardless. Hopefully a transmission/shuttle clean out will improve the driving thrust. The engine oil light on at idle could be the oil we used (possibly too thin). I'll know more when we get an oil pressure gauge fitted to the engine. It's odd that these mechanical rev counter dash machines didn't come with engine coolant temperature or oil pressure gauges (at least it seems mine didn't)

That engine coolant thing bugged me for a while so I fitted a coolant temp gauge into the dash.( 3cx white ish cab)

Apologies about informing you that the threads are different between those filters. I have a new filter on the shelf that was got for a 3cx transmission but never changed. Knew It has a larger hole than the engine oil filter but as it was never fitted to the intended machine,I didn't realize it was wrong! Seems I was given the wrong filter at the time. This one is for a JCB TM 300 shovel...

We all get caught in strange ways - I had the right filter, but the wrong box!
At some stage in it's life, my 3CX P8 won a box from a P12.
