JCB 3C II 1973 Crash gear change

Post #1 by Dave-OLW » Sun May 29, 2022 5:26 pm

JCB 3C II 1973 serial No. 3C 100788 Tractor serial No. 384B 172471
Now have a problem trying to get it into gear, it is grating and will not go in.
Clutch is ok, is it the synchromesh, can this be removed with Gearbox still in JCB?
Thanks David

Hi David, can you put it in gear then start the engine with the clutch depressed? If so how far do you have to release the pedal before the clutch bites?

There's no synchromesh in that gearbox. If it's grinding/grating with the pedal depressed, then the input shaft is still turning. Something's wrong with the clutch.Worn friction plate, weak springs in the pressure plate, worn toggle levers and/or kaput release bearing or adjustment required to bring the release bearing closer to the toggles.

That's what i'm thinking too, hopefully it just needs adjusting but could be more serious

Thanks for the replies, yes in gear clutch depressed it starts ok. On releasing clutch pedal it engages when it has only come up a short way, so I think it needs adjusting, will do and see if that solves it.
All the clutch parts were replaced in May 2016 when the engine seised and I rebuit it engine.
Thanks David

Could oil contamination cause the clutch to grab? You can take off the top of the housing on a Leyland skid to access the clutch.

Have adjusted clutch and that has solved the problem. There is a lot of play where brake pedal connects to rod supporting it.
Found oil is leaking from both axle housings so another job to do.

So I have to remove this back plate to get access to the half shaft nut then. I have to support the Box because this plate holds the rear of the box to the frame.
